 »  WHAT IS DRAGON BOATING?
Dragon Boating is a thrilling water sport, full of adrenaline, sportsmanship, strategy and technique. It is also a sport that's all about positive team spirit, being healthy, making friends and having fun - the Spirit of Dragon Boating.

A typical dragon boat consists of 20 paddlers, a steerer and a drummer. To paddle well and to win, a good crew train for months to gel, perfect technique, fitness and timing. The camaraderie of the sport now attracts thousands of paddlers to international and local Dragon Boat festivals.

Dragon Boating has 2,500 years of history, originating from China, the sport has become an annual event in many Dragon Boating countries including Hong Kong, Germany, Hungary, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, South Africa, USA, UK and many more.

INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOAT FEDERATION

IDBF is the governing body for World Dragon Boating Racing. Typical IDBF races range from 250m, 500m to 2km. There are also IDBF approved boats and paddles, a majority that are available now are under this specification. There are also many international clubs around the world that are not under IDBF, however still run as very reputable, serious and well organised clubs.

HISTORY OF DRAGON BOATING

There are many theories about how Dragon boating first came about, the most popular view is to commemorate a Chinese poet and politician Qu Yuan (340 - 278BC).

Driven to despair by the government's corruption at the time, the much loved politician and poet drowned in the river. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat Qu's body.

They also sat on long, narrow paddle boats called dragon boats, and tried to scare the fish away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking carved dragon head on the boat's prow.

In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "Poets' Day," due to Qu Yuan's status as China's first poet of personal renown.

Today, people eat bamboo-wrapped steamed glutinous rice dumplings called zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fish) and race dragon boats in memory of Qu's dramatic death.
